Should You Drink Protein Shakes on Rest Days?

The common question I get asked monthly (if not weekly): “Should/ can I drink a protein shake even if I’m not working out?” In short, YES. You can drink a protein shake on your rest days.
Protein is protein no matter the source. It is a macronutrient that is vital for muscle growth and repair, in which our bodies need to consume daily. Whether you get your protein from a chocolate flavored shake or a piece of chicken, it is all the same protein.
Protein shakes are a fast and easy way to consume your protein, especially for those on the go. Plus, let’s be real, many of us don’t like to take the time and effort to constantly be cooking up chicken or pork chops (or whichever protein source you prefer). So, shakes can be ideal for fast nutrition.
So, when it comes to protein shakes on rest days, there is nothing to fear but fear itself. However, keep in mind that if you are not working out, then your overall caloric intake for that day may be less than if you were working out. Therefore, you must be mindful about keeping your calories in the appropriate range for that day. An EXCESS of ANY calories, whether it be from a protein shake, eggs, almonds, or anything else, can eventually contribute to weight gain. But, protein shakes themselves do not contain anything that would cause harm to you on your rest days.
So, drink up!
